TEARS OF INJUSTICE
GLASS ART PROJECT
The No Tears Wasted sculpture art project was designed to create a tangible reminder of the injustices and tears shed by BIPOC community members due to systemic racism and the hardships BIPOC people have faced. This piece of art encompasses 100 beautiful, handcrafted teardrops that hang around MADF’s new Eloise’s Cooking Pot free food market building’s ceiling.
MADF serves 75,000 people each month with food bank services, and 70% of them are low- income and identify as BIPOC and/or multi-racial. Each uniquely made teardrop hangs from the free food market ceiling to represent the collective BIPOC experience, and the display is open to all for viewing.
This was a collaborative piece of art between MADF’s President/CEO, Ahndrea Blue, who designed the teardrop pieces and display, and David Price Jr. of Price Glass Werks of Tacoma, WA, who blew the glass to her design.
We hope to create a lasting impact on those who see this display and for what it represents; to create a talking piece, much like we did with our Muted Voices mural.
The new free food market building is perfect for this project, not only due to the main demographics we serve in the eastside Tacoma community but also because this area is a known food desert. With this new location, the area is no longer an official food desert, and it will be like the tears of pain that have been shed over history have watered down on those who visit the new market, watering the desert away. That no tears were wasted but have grown to provide hope, peace, courage, and resiliency.
